Free Essays on ââ¬ÅPorphyriaââ¬â¢s Loverââ¬Â Analysis
Robert Browningââ¬â¢s first dramatic monologue entitled, ââ¬Å"Porphyriaââ¬â¢s Loverâ⬠explores both psychological and mental states of its main character. It is told by a madman in the process of murdering his lover by strangling her with her own hair, which he does so that she can be his forever and will be in an eternal state of love. The title shows that the poem is about the main characterââ¬â¢s lover Porphyria. Browning uses personification, actions of the characters, and the setting to define the speakerââ¬â¢s attitude. This brings us to the question: What is the meaning of this poem? In lines 2-4, it shows how the wind was soon awake, tore the elm-tops down for spite, and vexed the lake. The speaker is giving human like qualities to things of nature. How is this strange? A sane person can tell the difference between what is authentic or counterfeit, dead or alive; however, this characterââ¬â¢s mental and psychological state is abnormal. You will see this further in the poem. The setting of the poem is also strange. A few details provide the setting: a stormy night, a cottage with a fireplace. It is also very gloomy, dark, and cold. What the speaker describes is nothing but negative thoughts from lines 1-8 where it says: The rain set early in to-night, The sullen wind was soon awake, It tore the elm-tops down for spite, And did its worst to vex the lake: I listenââ¬â¢d with heart fit to break. When glided in Porphyria; straight She shut the cold out and the storm, And kneeled and made the cheerless grate. Pelzer 2 This shows a sense of peculiarity because this type of weather is not suitable for anyone, but the speaker seems to be used to this life of dreariness and darkness. The actions of the characters also make the poem strange. When Porphyria is brought into the poem, she seemed to be calm and quiet. She takes off her wet clothing and gets comfortable. She whispers his name and says how much she loves ... Synonyms for Think
Synonyms for Think Synonyms for Think Synonyms for Think By Mark Nichol The bland verb think (from the Old English word thencan, and cognate with thank) is easily supplanted by any one of an impressive assortment of synonyms, each of which has a precise connotation think cannot match. Here are some to think about. To cogitate is to think deeply and intently; the root of the word, which is unrelated to cognition (which refers to knowledge rather than thinking), stems from agitare (meaning ââ¬Å"driveâ⬠), from which we also get agitate. Contemplate connotes thought that is extensive as well as deep; another sense is ââ¬Å"view as possible or probable.â⬠The root of contemplatus, the Latin source word, is templum, the word for a place where omens are observed; it is cognate with temple. Deliberate means to think carefully, as implied by its source, the adjective deliberate. An additional sense is ââ¬Å"discuss before making a decision,â⬠as when a legislative body meets to decide about whether to pass a law. (The derivation is from deliberare, meaning ââ¬Å"consider carefully,â⬠the root is possibly libra, meaning ââ¬Å"poundâ⬠or ââ¬Å"scale,â⬠with the sense of weighing.) To meditate is to focus oneââ¬â¢s thoughts on something; the word, which can, alternatively, allude to planning, also refers to a mental exercise conducted in order to achieve a high state of spiritual awareness. (Meditate is derived from the Latin verb mederi, meaning ââ¬Å"remedy,â⬠and is related to medical and medicine.) Mull, from the Middle English noun mul, meaning ââ¬Å"dust,â⬠is cognate with meal and refers not only to lengthy consideration but also to grinding. Ponder has the connotation of carefully weighing a problem (as a matter of fact, ponder stems from the Latin verb ponderare, meaning ââ¬Å"weigh,â⬠and is related to ponderous), with the implication of extended inconclusive thinking. A similar term with the same etymological origin is perpend. Reflect means, among other things, ââ¬Å"think calmly and quietlyâ⬠; its root is from flectere (meaning ââ¬Å"bendâ⬠), which is also the source of flex. To ruminate is to slowly and repeatedly go over something as if chewing it like a ruminant, a type of animal, such as a cow, that chews its food over and over again. (The word stems from the Latin term rumen, the name in that language and in English for part of a cowââ¬â¢s stomach.) ââ¬Å"Chew overâ⬠is an informal synonym. Others include the word eye and the phrases ââ¬Å"kick around,â⬠ââ¬Å"pore over,â⬠and ââ¬Å"wrestle with.â⬠Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Parallels In U.S. History Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Parallels In U.S. History - Essay Example The Confederates were defeated and surrendered on April 9, 1865. The Civil War succeeded in providing equal civil rights to all Americans. On January 1, 1863, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation that declared freedom for slaves in all Confederate States. Congress passed the 13th (1865), 14th (1868) and 15th (1870) Amendments to the Constitution outlawing slavery, confirming citizenship of blacks and making it illegal to deny the right to vote on the basis of race. Business and the Economy developed and expanded after the Civil War. American industry changed dramatically. Machines were used to replace hand labor. Major inventions took place such as the typewriter (Christopher Latham Sholes), farm equipment (Deere & Co.) and celluloid (John Wesley Hyatt). Telegraph lines and railroads began to reshape the economy. The American Railway system became a nationwide transportation network that spurred economic growth. Investors invested huge sums of money in the stocks and bonds of corporations; banks lent corporations money to expand their business activities. Industrial growth caused cities to expand as people began to migrate in record numbers. In contrast, the South, badly hit by major wartime losses, failed Confederate currencies and disintegrated labor supply, suffered a doomed economy, with large farms broken into parcels and given out to tenant farming: the tenant farmers lacked the incentive to improve land that was not their own, and the l and owners did not have full control over production. In Art and Architecture, artists like Jasper Cropsey and Albert Bioerstadt popularized landscape painting. American realism entered art during the Civil War with artists like Winslow Homer and Lily Martin Spencer painting civil war scenes. The Civil War resulted in a large demand for statues of leading figures such

Others offer inviting, intimate and warm atmosphere for lunch and dinner with families and friends created by wood paneled and flagstone walls, captivating artwork, oversized curved leather booths and an open kitchen system (Restaurants America 2009). A good example is Red Star Tavern. Looking at employment in the restaurant industry, most entry-level jobs in this sector need slight or no previous training and basic tasks often can be learned in a short time (Ingram and Joel 68-102). Restaurant managers and many division heads, for instance a head chef, usually need some formal training, or years of hospitality industry know-how, or both. All positions in this business need employees to uphold a customer-service direction. Almost all workers in the restaurant business in United States undertake some on-the-job training provided under the supervision of an experienced employee or manager to become accustomed to new employees to any exceptional characteristics of the property or the local area. The restaurant market is projected to see a rise in the number of restaurants in the United States. Comparison of how The Flea and To His Coy Mistress Present and Develop
The Flea and To His Coy Mistress are two poems written by poets living during the Renaissance Period. To His Coy Mistress was written by Andrew Marvell and The Flea was written by John Donne. Both of these poets were well-educated 'metaphysical poets', and these poems illustrate metaphysical concerns, highly abstract and theoretical ideas, that the poets would have been interested in. Both poems are based around the same idea of trying to reason with a 'mistress' as to why they should give up their virginity to the poet. There is a similar theme running through both of the poems, in which both mistresses are refusing to partake in sexual intercourse with both of the poets. The way in which both poets present their argument is quite different as Marvell is writing from a perspective from which he is depicting his mistress as being 'coy', and essentially, mean, in refusing him sex, and Donne is comparing the blood lost by a flea bite to the blood that would be united during sex. Marvell immediately makes clear his thoughts in the poem when he says, "Had we but world enough, and time/ This coyness, Lady were no crime", he is conveying the 'carpe diem' idea that there is not enough time for her to be 'coy' and refuse him sexual intercourse and he justifies this thought when he suggests when she is dead, in ?thy marble vault?, and ?worms shall try that long preserved virginity?. He is using the idea of worms crawling all over and in her corpse as a way of saying that the worms are going to take her virgin ity if she waits until death. Donne justifies his bid for her virginity in a much longer and more methodical way, he uses the idea of the flea taking her blood and mixing it with his, ?It suck?d me first, and now sucks thee?, and then... ...n The Flea) were viewed as extremely inventive and clever in the eyes of the people reading them during the Renaissance period. The poets integrated ?metaphysical conceits? as focal parts of these poems. Along with these, they used effective language as a basis for their convincing arguments, they included subjects of periodical importance (e.g. ?courtship? and ?religion?), and use very clever structures that are manipulated in order to make the poem read in the desired way. The very clear indication of the theme in question was strongly aided by the way in which the personas portrayed the emotions they felt and the way they showed their attitudes towards the subject. Considering all these factors, the poets made critical arguments to the mistresses in order to alter their views, thus changing their minds, on denying the poets the sex that they desired so strongly.

Compare and Contrast Essay- Speak
These themes are very prevalent with the man in Not Waving But Drowning by Steve Smith and with Melinda from Speak by Laurie Hales Anderson. In the novel Speak, the mall character, Melinda Sordid has many tough problems to face. Sometimes, she chooses not to ask for help, but merely hang back and let It pass her by. After a while, her problems almost swallow her whole. She gets the help she needs when she acts well enough to deserve it again. However, in Not Waving But Drowning, the man did not treat people very well, did not deserve help, and did not et it.He lost his battle against the world and took his own life. In both cases, the choices you make decide whether or not you get the help that you need. The man from Not Waving But Drowning, whom will be called George for the time being, and Melinda Cordons seem to have many things In common. But there are some key differences between them. For one, Melinda lives through her pain. By the end of her story, she has gotten help and is w ell on the Journey of rediscovering herself, however, George was not so lucky.George was known for messing with people and being a prankster. Even though this could've been a defense mechanism, George may have brought his tragic death or pain on himself. Whether or not George actually died or he Just had extreme depression and pain In his heart from the world is not clear, but he clearly Is not able to deal with the amount of pain that he Is dealing with. A major difference between Melinda and George would be that one lived through their painful ordeal and one did not. Another major difference between Melinda and George would be suicide.By the ay that Not Waving But Drowning implies that it was ââ¬Å"too cold for his heart to handleâ⬠, George sounds dead. The cause of death being the fact that his heart couldn't handle the cold, but not literally. This means that he couldn't take the pain, and ended his own life. Melinda, however, only made one attempt at cutting her wrists wi th paperclips. In fact, after that being her all time low, she picked herself back up and found her own strength in her flaws. The matter of suicide is another difference that Melinda and George have. There is, however, one major similarity that George and Melinda have. Nobody saw his or her cries for help. For George, ââ¬Å"Nobody heard him, but still he lay a Joke because he loved ââ¬Å"larkingâ⬠or messing around. Melanin's cries for help were written off as well, such as when she cried on Christmas, her sudden drop in social skills, grades, and an effort at life. They are clearly cries for help when it is realized that she longs for a friend, no matter how much she pushes people away. Melinda and George Just want some help but nobody recognizes it.The help you get depends on how you treat others and whether or not you deserve it. George and Melinda treat people in certain ways. George treats everything like a Joke, therefore his cries for help and pain is written off as a Joke. Melinda treats people as awfully as she feels inside. One mistake made her from a normal carefree girl to who she is in most of the novel Speak. Her mistake does not make her unworthy of help, so she gets it. No matters how long it takes, better late than never, help with come to those who deserve it.
